Wheel Powder Coating in Santa Ana, CA

Durable finish. Precise application. Long-lasting protection.

Why Choose Wheel Powder Coating Over Paint

Your wheels take a beating every day. Brake dust, road salt, UV exposure, and the occasional curb all add up. Liquid paint handles it for a while, but powder coating is built for it. At Metalworks & Tire Place in Santa Ana, we powder coat wheels using commercial-grade equipment and process, the same approach used on fleet and performance vehicles, applied to your car or truck.

Whether you want to restore faded factory rims to a fresh finish or go a different direction entirely with a custom color, we handle the full job in-house from stripping through to final cure.

A Finish That Holds Up Where Paint Gives Out

Your wheels sit directly in the path of everything the road throws at a vehicle. Heat from braking, chemical runoff, road grit, and winter debris all hit the wheel surface first. Traditional liquid paint bonds at the surface level, which is fine until it is not and once it starts chipping or peeling on a wheel, it goes fast.

Powder coating bonds differently. The powder is applied electrostatically to the bare metal surface and then cured at high heat, which causes the coating to fuse into the metal rather than sitting on top of it. The result is a thicker, harder layer that does not peel, does not chip easily, and does not fade the way painted finishes do after a couple of seasons.

For most drivers, a professionally powder coated set of wheels lasts five to ten years with normal use and basic care. That is two to three times the lifespan of a standard repaint and it looks better longer because the finish does not dull or oxidize the way paint does.

How Our Process Works

A lot of shops skip steps to turn jobs faster. We do not, because skipping prep is exactly what causes powder coating to fail early. Here is what happens to your wheels from drop-off to pick-up.

Surface Stripping - We remove the existing finish, whether that is factory paint, a previous powder coat, or chrome plating completely before anything else happens. Chrome wheels require full stripping through chemical or mechanical means before powder will adhere. Any shop that skips this step and applies powder over an existing finish is setting up a failure.

Media Blasting - Once stripped, the wheel surface is blasted to open the metal pores and remove any remaining contaminants. This is what allows the powder to form a proper bond. It also reveals any structural issues cracks, welds, or bends that would affect the final finish.

Masking - Mounting surfaces, valve stem holes, and any areas that need to stay bare metal are masked before coating begins. If powder gets onto the mounting pad where the wheel seats against the rotor, it can cause vibration or improper seating. This is a detail a lot of shops miss.

Powder Application - The powder is applied electrostatically using a spray gun, which charges the particles so they are drawn evenly across the entire surface including recessed spoke areas and inner barrel edges.

Curing - The coated wheel goes into a high-temperature oven where the powder melts and fuses. Once cured and cooled, the finish is hard and ready for tire mounting.

Most jobs are completed and ready for pickup within one to two business days. Call us to confirm turnaround for your specific wheels before dropping off.

Colors and Finishes Available

We carry a full range of powder coat colors and finishes, and we stock the most popular options so most jobs do not require special ordering.

Gloss black is the most requested finish we do, it gives wheels a deep, wet look and works on everything from daily drivers to trucks. Matte black is the flat, stealth option that has stayed popular because it photographs well and does not show fingerprints. Satin black sits between the two with a slight sheen that reads as more refined than matte without being as high-maintenance as full gloss.

Beyond black, we do a lot of gunmetal and anthracite finishes for drivers who want a darker look without going full black. Gloss white and satin silver are common on trucks and larger SUVs. Candy colors (red, blue and gold) require additional stages and cost more, but the results stand out.

We also offer two-tone finishes where the spokes and barrel are different colors, though these require more masking time and are priced accordingly.

If you are looking for a painted finish instead, we also offer wheel painting as an alternative.

If you have a specific color in mind, bring a photo or a color code and we will tell you whether we can match it or get close. We would rather have that conversation before you drop the wheels off than after.
